Japan is once again making a push to re-open the hunting of whales. Japan is pointing to the restoration of the populations of some species as a reason to resume “managed” hunting of whales but is unlikely to get approval to lift restrictions at a special meeting it is calling of the International Whaling Commission in May. Japan does harvest some whales under the guise of its current scientific study program and sells the meat commercially. It appears the popularity of whale meat with Japanese consumers is dwindling and the need for increased killing of the creatures does not appear to be motivated by consumer demand. Most commercial hunting of whales has been banned since 1986.
