If you’re fishing deep in the Adirondack backcountry you might be tempted to risk the negative longterm health effects of a Deet based insect repellent just to keep the black flies out of your ears, nostrils and various orifices. The New England Journal of Medicine has found all-natural, Deet-free, Bite Blocker insect repellent to be just as effective as its Deet laden competitors.
The soybean based Bite Blocker line of products come with ingredients listed by the EPA as minimum risk. Bite Blocker comes in various sizes and applicators.
They even have a new tropical scent…if you go for that kind of thing.

I greatly prefer Natrapel which uses citronella as a main ingredient this actually doesn’t work as well as eucalyptus or catnip which can be found in several others including Buzz Away and Amrita. These contain only essential oils… no glycerin like Bite Blocker.
Thanks for the info, we’ll check it out!
I tried this product in Australia and it really worked well. I’ve used other natural products and found them to be much less effective. Bite Blocker Xtreme version holds up in a tropical climate. I asked the manufacturer about the glycerin and it is a vegetable glycerin (from plants) that is used as a humectant to help moisturize the skin. It feels great!
