Reef: a visual adventure

reef.jpg

Color bursts forth like confetti from each page of this stunning visual adventure to coral reefs around the world. Each photo intimately captures a remarkable creature carrying on its day, providing insights into the lives of some of the least-understood animals. Photos are large and accompanied by factoids and quotes from the photographers, who explain the thrill, patience, and story behind a particular shot in lively language, making you feel you are underwater with them.

This book announces its commitment to conservation on the cover and in the introduction, even dedicating a section to reef conservation. I’ve always believed that conservation begins with education and interest, and this book is an excellent way to make anyone care about reef life. A portion of proceeds are donated to the Coral Reef Alliance, a nonprofit organization.

The accompanying DVD provides great supplemental videos. Watch schooling fish, preying animals, deceptive creatures, new life, and photographers interacting with these subjects to a pleasant soundtrack.

I read my copy of Reef, written by the Scubazoo team and published by DK, at the beach today with sand accumulating in the binding, the breeze helping me turn pages. Looking at these glossy pages is like looking through a kaleidoscope, though the images here are no illusion. My favorite pictures are of pygmy seahorses, rays, and camouflaged fishes. Highly recommended.
