Love your cell phone but hate ugly, obtrusive cellphone and radio towers? Well Ericsson is trying to give both our skylines and their industry a designer face-lift with the Tower Tube telecommunications site. The ‘Tube’ will contain all that wireless, telecommunications gobbledygook in one sleekly designed, architecturally pleasing edifice that may just be a net plus aesthetically for your community’s skyline.
The Tower reduces land use by being only about 5 meters in diameter; its modular concrete construction makes it quick and easy to assemble; all the equipment inside is protected from the elements, providing for fewer repairs and longer shelf-life; and the Power Tube’s exterior color, style, and finish can be customized for each community’s tastes and preferences (maybe pastels for Malibu, hot pink for San Fran and a neon pulsating phallus for Vegas).

I recently visited Vietnam where I was horrified telecoms pylons being built to cut across a picturesque valley with rice paddys cut into the hillside. OK, I guess it’s easy for me as a foreigner to complain…. but tourism is bringing so much money to the area and by building these ugly towers they were destroying to very landscape people were coming to see. Sensitive development and planning (as well as architecturally pleasing cell towers) should really be considered…. I mean, I wonder if it’s not cheaper to put a few well placed cell towers in position than to lay fixed cables everywhere for landlines.
