Push Button House - a transformed shipping container

2007_10_illycafe.jpg

The metamorphosis of what appears to be (and originated as) a standard industrial shipping container into the Push Button House is said to take about 90 seconds via computer controlled hydraulics. Adam Kalkin and sponsor,
illy caffe, are opening a coffeehouse version of the Push Button House in the the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle in NYC from 11/28 thru 12/29/07 for illy espresso and design lovers alike.

The Push Button House was originally unveiled by illy at the 52nd International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale in June and contained a complete complement of all the comforts and accomodations needed for contemporary, container-sized living - all constructed from recycled or recyclable materials. The Push Button House is a variation on the Quick House design.

Homes which are made from abundantly available cargo containers are said to be windproof, floodproof, fire resistant, eco-friendly, low cost, quickly assembled, eye-catchingly unique and in-demand. Below are a few more of Mr. Kalkin’s designs including the Push Button House all folded up:
