tento seed bracelet – eco-style

tentoseedbracelet.jpgReferred to in the wilds of Brazil as the “seed of love,” the vibrantly red tento seed makes an eye-catching bracelet. Indigenous women have adorned their bodies with this seed for centuries – now it’s time for their urban sisters to test the tento seed’s attractive powers.

Vegan Cosmetics Line – Gourmet Body Treats

Submitted by: Julia Fenster of The LOHASIAN.

Cosmetics That Are Actually Good For You (and Look Tasty Too!)

Soap.jpgcocoa.jpg

An Austin Texas based company named Gourmet Body Treats is making its own bit of history as possibly the first company in the cosmetics industry to become fully sustainable in both their products and packaging.

The company launched in 2000 and offers a wide array of vegan skin care and cosmetics products, all of which are free of animal or animal products, including insect products (no honey or beeswax) and algae and algae derivatives. The products are also free of parabens, dyes, sulfates, mineral oil, talc, petroleum or any other dangerous chemicals, and are packaged in small portions (in reusable containers) to avoid spoiling. The company also exemplifies its commitment to a consciousness centered business approach, by making a commitment to be entirely carbon neutral by 2010. All we can say is wow about their “good for you, good for earth” approach that hits high marks on every level of mindful business practices.

The Gourmet Body Treats announcement comes at an interesting time just as the cosmetics industry is beginning to recognize the economic impact of the natural and organic cosmetics lines, which now amounts to an impressive global market surpassing $7 billion a year (Organic Monitor). It’s finally becoming big business to simultaneously keep our faces, and the face of the planet, both beautiful and healthy.

Patagonia’s Capilene – sustainable outdoor wear

patgnia.jpg
Patagonia’s Capilene undergarments replace the need for wool base layers. These warm and comfortable goodies also wick off sweat – which is good for when you are skiing and find yourself traversing over flat ground… or when you winter backpack.

Furthermore, the Capilene products are environmentally friendly. They’re made from 50% recycled polyester and now thanks to their “Common Threads Program” you can mail in your worn out Capilene base layers to be recycled at the Patagonia plant.

In addition to sweat elimination, Patagonia’s Capilene includes an odor-eliminating feature. While other companies use a heavy-metal compound to thwart odors in clothing, Patagonia uses an alternative naturally derived from crab shells that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Creative!
