Not Quite Nascar - World Solar Challenge

For months now, teams have been gearing up to participate in this year’s World Solar Challenge, sponsored by Panasonic. The Panasonic World Solar Challenge, scheduled every other year, is an event based on a competitive field of solar cars crossing the Australian continent powered by nothing but the sun. Teams are required to research, build and design vehicles capable of completing the 3000 km journey from tropical Darwin in the Northern Territory, to cosmopolitan Adelaide in South Australia.
Currently underway, the focus of this event is to promote fuel supply awareness by demonstrating vehicles with super fuel efficiency and low emissions. These clean green machines have found the perfect balance between sustainable speed and energy management. This year’s competition will be held from October 21st to October 28th and will mark the 20th anniversary of the challenge.
Friends and family that want to experience the route without the solar car feeling can join the Club Solar Tour and cruise the same way the cars go, except cool and safe in an air-conditioned coach. Interestingly enough, just as this year’s competition is beginning, some have already made plans for future ones. Entries for the 2007 race are closed, but some have already started registering for the next planned race in 2009!
