If you love the sun and your iPod, this just may be the satchel for you. Noon Solar, a company founded by two young, innovative students from the Art Institute of Chicago, is launching its new website and line of solar power handbags for men and women.
These attractive, practical bags use a flexible solar panel to store energy that charges your iPod, PDA, or cell phone on the go. Now there’s a bright idea!
Noon Solar bags are composed of biodegradable products tanned with sustainable materials such as rhubarb and walnuts, as well as naturally hand-dyed fabrics. Their manufacture operates on the “cradle to cradle” philosophy for like-minded folks who don’t support our nation’s dependence on oil. Noon Solar is also committed to ethical, fair labor – respecting both the Earth and the diverse people who live there.

The be truly “Cradle to Cradle” these bags would have to be assessed and certified by MBDC.

Thank you for your concern. I have emailed Noon Solar to see if they are certified and what measures they have that back up their Cradle-to-Cradle claim. I’ll let you know when they respond.
These are great. I’d love to have one. What an intesting idea.
Noon Solar has kindly responded that they were unaware of MBDC certification, but they are looking into it. Although they do not hold this certification, they do operate under the cradle-to-cradle philosophy. Here is an excerpt from their response:
“Even though we are not certified, we do use the Cradle to Cradle philosophy to make our bags. Our bags contain solar panels, which produce renewable power, use electronics that are recyclable and/or reclaimable, and use biodegradable textiles and materials for the bodies, along with ethical labor based in the Americas.
I look forward to looking into the certification and applying.”
Where are your bags for Noon Solar bags actually manufactured? USA? and if so where Chicago area or where? Would like to know.
Interesting concept.
We don’t make the Noon Solar Bags we just thought they were a nice design. I know they make the bag itself in-house (USA), but I don’t know the origins of the solar panel. Here’s a link to their site: http://www.noonsolar.com/about-noon/
Noon is located in Chicago.
