Consumer electronics companies are rolling out the ‘green’ at this week’s CES. One company developing an innovative power saving technology is Green Plug. Their new technology would provide real-time power management on all manner of small electronics devices and gadgets, from PDA’s and laptops, to cellphone chargers, printers, routers and TV’s.
Green Plug’s intelligent power supplies communicate with electronic devices and agree upon device power requirements for all devices connected to them. All cables and connectors are uniform and, being intelligent power sources, they eliminate wasted “phantom power” (power that is wasted when chargers are plugged in and either connected to devices that are fully charged or have no devices connected to them) and improve power utilization and efficiency.
Green Plug’s business model is based upon sales of embeddable technology that make power supplies universal and more efficient. They license the device-side GreentalkTM protocol and the universal connector design royalty-free. Translation: they make their money on the chip in the device.
This power management technology can eliminate all those ugly black power supplies. It’s estimated that 379 million power supplies will be jettisoned into U.S. landfills in 2008 alone.
The challenge is to get electronics manufacturers to sign on.
