Grow Local, Go Local – curb the carbon!

Red tomatoes ripened on the vine, artichokes and strawberries, any kind of peach or cherry you could want, crepes and handcrafts and jams oh, my! So many choices are available at your local farmer’s market – it’s fresh, and you support the local economy! Avoid those hazardous carbon emissions that come from hauling, flying, and shipping foods thousands of miles cross-country and cross-continent. Talk to the farmers yourself. Enjoy the bustle and the colors, the samples and the flavors, the joy that comes from a hand-to-hand exchange lacking the middle man.
For a comprehensive directory of farmer’s markets across the United States, visit farmersmarket.com. To test it out, I searched the database, and sure enough my two favorite farmer’s markets in La Jolla and Ocean Beach were listed, along with others in the area about which I was ignorant.
They also have a “Make Mine Organic” line, complete with t-shirts, bibs, boxes, and bags. I like the market tote ($17.99), and tank (in white, $18.99). Unfortunately I can’t confirm whether or not they are are, in fact, organic. (Do I spot an eco-poser?)
Still, this is one great directory. And hey, if we’re going to cut carbon 80% by 2050, we’d better step it up!
