Both confirmed junkaholics as well as newbies to the wonderful world of junk will delight in Sue Whitney and Ki Nassauer’s latest book, Junk Beautiful. These clever and prolific purveyors of cast-offs and pre-loved items (yes, junk) demonstrate how to tackle the art of decorating your home room by room — utilizing what you may find on the street, in the trash, at flea markets, tag sales, consignment shops and of course, also at the dump.
I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Sue at Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market in Manhattan a couple of weeks ago. Sue is what I would describe as, Type A Creative; she’s a bundle of energy, full of imagination and a walking encyclopedia on junk. She and co-author Ki skillfully and tastefully transform discarded items into functional pieces with distinct personalities for 9 different design challenges, including a kitchen, dining room, laundry room, mudroom, living room, bedroom, home office and hallway.

In this day of re-using existing goods as much as possible, Junk Beautiful is a great resource — with 30 DIY projects — learn from the hands-on pros, and start creating your own style from good old, funky finds.
