Kids say the darndest things. So when my 6-year-old asked me yesterday how many light bulbs we have in the house I wasn’t as shocked as I was curious about where her query originated. Seems the eco-savvy Easter Bunny brought her Ellen Sabin’s “The Greening Book” which hopes, among other wonderful aspirations, to “grow kids with character” by helping them learn to be friendly with their planet. Full of educational activities, this nifty little package shares valuable insights in totally kid-friendly language along with charming illustrations. Kids become active partners in their own learning experience as they identify ways the Earth has been good to them and then uncover ways to protect the Earth in return.
Best of all, kids write much of the book themselves. One page asks them to list all the things in the house that use electricity, another encourages them to study an endangered animal then note what they’ve learned about how to protect it, and one more suggests they speak up for the Earth by sharing their green ideas with others and making a “family promise” to help the environment. Big ideas tailored for little people can make all the difference in the world.
