Two great Santa Fe inns, Hacienda Nicholas and The Madeleine Inn, have a mission to “Go Green All the Way.” “We are already the greenest lodging in Santa Fe, and by the time the new eco-friendly Convention Center opens, just four blocks away, we will be that much closer to our ultimate goal of having a zero carbon footprint,” says owner Carolyn Lee. The inns are new members of the group Environmentally Friendly Hotels and have the highest green rating on the Allstays Eco/Green Lodging listing. Hacienda Nicholas and The Madeleine Inn are also new Partner Members of the Green Hotels Association, which certifies that the staff of Hacienda Nicholas and The Madeleine Inn has committed to incorporating sustainable earth policies and practices in the running of their inns.
“The inns have implemented a number of changes to be the most eco-friendly business possible, without compromising the comfort level of their guests. What began with the retrofitting of low-flow toilets and showerheads and an invitation to guests to opt out of daily washing of linens has now spread to all aspects of inn keeping. All cleaning agents and chemicals used to clean guest rooms have been replaced by all-natural, environmentally safe products. The properties recycle all allowable glass, paper and plastic and compost all organic matter. Wherever possible, compact fluorescent and LED light bulbs are utilized, which use 1/3 the energy of incandescent bulbs. Motion detectors and solar lighting are used outdoors, while natural lighting supplies most of the light by day. All stationery is printed on recycled paper, using soy-based ink, though most correspondence is now conducted electronically. Dispensers for hair and skin products have replaced individually packaged amenities, and meals are prepared with organic ingredients. As rooms are repainted, only environmentally responsible paint products are used. In addition, 80% of the inns’ electricity is wind-generated, and the gardens are fertilized organically. The properties will continue to implement more changes in order to further reduce their carbon footprint. They are currently working to implement a grey water system for their gardens, and hope to go solar within the next year.”
Hacienda Nicholas and The Madeleine are small inns, consisting of seven rooms each, and are located just four blocks from the Plaza and the new Convention Center. Guests can enjoy the on-site Absolute Nirvana Spa, itself a member of The Green Spa Network.
