The Freunds run a dairy farm and a farm store in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut. They are not producers of meat or meat products. They use cow manure for fertilizer (I purchase a dump truck load of semi-processed manure from them for my garden and farm each year)and the methane from cow manure to produce electricity. The Discovery Channel program on their operation in Dirty Jobs says a lot. N&J may have a good conceptual point but it doesn't apply to Matt and Ben Freund or to Cowpots.

The Freunds run a family dairy operation with a focus on environmentally sound management of their energy stream. Take a look at their story on the Cowpots website. They appear to have a close, caring relationship with their herd. We have asked them to respond.

The phrase "slaughter them en masse" seems to be a rather dramatic rush to judgment. By all appearances they seem to be doing a very eco-friendly thing here.

These sound great and are definitely a better option then peat pots but I wonder about the cows that are creating the manure. Are they being pumped full of antibiotics and fed an unnatural diet to plump them up fat then slaughter them en masse? That's not really the type of business that I want to support nor do I want my plants growing in that.
