I must say filthy farmgirl’s name, tag line and retro graphics caught my attention so I had to soap-up and check them out, first-hand. They grow and harvest many of their own herbs and spices, go out of their way to support local organic farmers, and create 100 percent natural and vegan friendly soaps without detergents, surfactants, sulfates, artificial scents, colorizers or petroleum products of any kind.

Filthy Farmgirl soap not only has down-home, wholesome ingredients and eco-friendly values, but boy, do they smell incredible! The essential oils deliver a powerfully fresh and clean sensation – yummy stuff. Aside from a delicious array of scents for the ladies, there’s Mountain Man and Manly Man, as well as Muddy Puppy Dog to keep all farmhands (and feet) happy. Having just returned to the house from lugging up-rooted 6-foot cattails into the woods, scrubbing my bod with their citrus ginger scent was sheer bliss. With 34 flavors to choose from, a generous size, and free shipping, they’re sure to please. $6./each or try the (smaller) bar 4-pack sampler for only $6.50

yeah these soaps are great… except they use palm oil. I might as well just tear down the rainforest myself, at least then I’d get some more exercise. I checked out their site they don’t even mention palm oil on the “Live Nakedly” portion talking about the soap ingredients, even though all the soaps I clicked on have palm oil in it. No cred.
Hey Angela,
We contacted Gretchen Wetzel, co-founder of Filthy Farmgirl, on your behalf and here’s what she had to say:
“We appreciate your concern about oils and where they come from VERY MUCH!
These days the cost of oils is skyrocketing, and it’s getting harder and harder to nail down where ingredients ACTUALLY originate. We do our best to source our ingredients from conscientious suppliers, as much of it as possible comes from local growers here in hawaii. But we are quite skeptical about the “fair trade” and “sustainably harvested” seals that companies throw around nowadays. When you delve deeper and press them for answers, more often than not, the trail get’s fuzzy before you get to the actual source of the product! Because of this frustrating situation, we’ve recently hatched a long term scheme to import OUR OWN sustainably harvested coconut and palm oil DIRECTLY from the south pacific to our hawaii workshop via (get this)…sailboats! This is largely the brainchild of our neighbor here in hawaii (a butterfly farmer), who also works with a sailboat freight company and has discovered a manufacturer of coconut presses which run on burning coconut husks in India. (The indian government has actually formed a coconut ministry, so they ahead of the game!) So…while we recognize the palm oil crisis, we don’t think that boycotting it (and nothing else) is the solution…at least not yet. We feel strongly that providing people an all affordable natural product that is completely unrelated to the chemical cosmetic industry is the first step to a happier cleaner planet.”
Cheers,
