Earth Kits for Kids – a big hit

Here’s a Tried and True review of a great gift for kids by Guest Blogger and mother of two young boys, our very green, CarrieLou W.

If you’re looking for a great holiday gift for kids, think inside the box, or in this case, inside the kit. The kit, made with recycled materials and printed with water based inks, is actually the EARTH KIT FOR KIDS.

Packed with inspirational ideas and useful items, this kit will motivate any eco challenged kid, or adult, for that matter. The kit contains:  THE EVERYTHING KIDS’ ENVIRONMENT BOOK, a 100% organic cotton GO GREEN t-shirt, GO GREEN  dog tag, BPA-free water bottle, a seeded download card w/2 free songs that can be planted after use, a GREEN AT HEART bracelet, a KIDS GO GREEN certificate of recognition, and my favorite, a planted tree on your behalf by American Forests.

My two boys (ages 5 and 10) certainly enjoyed receiving this green gift.  When the kit arrived, (no excess packaging here) they were excited to discover all of the contents.  The older one gravitated toward the T-shirt, download card, and water bottle while the younger one liked the dog tag and bracelet.

They both thought the book was cool as this book really does have EVERYTHING!  Included are earth friendly puzzles, pictures to color, a glossary of definitions, resources for environmental groups, web sites, and too numerous to list ways to help save the environment.  I wish this book were part of my 4th graders school curriculum as this book helps kids understand the concept: THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY.

Overall, the Earth Kit was a big hit!  My 10 year old son now doesn’t go to school without the water bottle and even wanted to keep the box for “treasures” (baseball cards, ticket stubs, etc.)  THE EARTH KIT FOR KIDS will definitely be on our TO GIVE list this holiday season.

Deluxe Kit, ($48 sale price) or Mini Kit, ($28) – link here for details.

Green Your Move

A greener approach to moving has been formed upon a recent relocation of where I hang my heart. The strategy eliminates the heavy dose of boxes, plastic wraps, packaging foam, tissue paper, and tape that more traditional approaches administer to the Earth.

Below are some simple ways to help make your next move, a more eco-friendly move.

(1)    Boxes: Don’t buy them! Ask local paint stores, electronic stores, pet shops, etc what day their shipments come in; request their donations to you.
(2)    Packaging: Use (a) old, cleaned and crumbled Styrofoam containers, (b) crumpled up junk mail in place of tissue paper, (c) clothes/towels (clean clothes for dishes; “dirty” clothes for dusty decorative items), (d) old sheets and blankets for furniture covers.
(3)    Driving: rent the biggest van you need to eliminate multiple runs.
(4)    Tape the entire way across the bottom, but only a simple perpendicular strip on top with boxes that won’t be closed for long (or simply fold box flaps into each other).
(5)    Mail: Put your new address on a do not mail list before moving. Otherwise, you’ll receive endless advertisements from just about every business in the area.

As I understand that many might cringe at the thought of using clothing or towels as packaging material, these are only suggestions. What I hope is that these steps are able to spark your creative green engine during future moving endeavors.
