In case you missed it, the U.N. has designated tomorrow, Sunday March 22, World Water Day. In the coming years, water will join oil as a catalyst for both world conflict and cooperation.

This year’s theme is the catchy, Transboundary Water. Surprisingly, there hasn’t been much media coverage of this event, or water-related environmental issues — awareness pales in comparison to Earth Day/Week/Month, (April 22).
Associated Water Day events include a Water Poetry Contest to the Australian “No Uranium Mining” event sponsored by the Families for a Nuclear Free Future. You can also get involved by signing the Canadian National Toilet Seat Petition sponsored by WaterCan; (seriously, I couldn’t make up stuff like this). U.S.-based exciting events include, (ahem): Waterband’s Internet Concert on 7-9p (ET) Sunday, March 22; or take The Water Challenge.

“Over one billion people are without access to adequate water supply and 2.5 billion lack basic sanitation, leaving millions to die every year from otherwise preventable water-related diseases,” according to globalwaternetwork.org.
Thanks to Simon O., who provided the following tip: Good Magazine just released a video in celebration of WWD that reimagines one of those Crocodile Mile commercials as if they were shot in a third world country with unsanitary water: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x8rZsMzfDM
