RAWnovations, Part 4

1vegetables.jpg

Whether you’re transitioning into a raw/ living foods lifestyle, or just desiring better nutrition and health, there are some kitchen gadgets that will serve your digestive systems and overworked hands well – juicers, food processors, blenders, dehydrators, and sprouting jars.  Keeping the hazards of electronic waste in mind, I will show you the best devices out there that are guaranteed to outlast a parade of less expensive versions. Hence, while their prices fly a little high, they will save you money in the long run – especially by chasing away future doctor bills.

recycled skateboard stools

deckstool.jpg

Deckstool has taken skateboard furniture to a new level by utilizing broken, repurposed skateboards as the raw material for these cool looking stools.  The boards are harvested from that urban mecca of eastern skateboarding, Philadelphia, and though finely crafted, retain the character and wear patterns of their previous life on the streets.  Longer sections of broken decks become legs and shorter sections become seats.  The skateboard’s truck ties the whole deal together.

iStoreGreen – clean, green self storage

Even the formerly dingy, self storage industry is getting a green face-lift.

isglogo1.jpg

low_IMG_0947_1.jpgThe current economic and housing crisis may precipitate a boom in the self-storage industry by making it necessary for folks to put some of their stuff in storage.  If you live in the NYC area and you find the need to squirrel some of your valuables away, you couldn’t make a better choice than the supremely eco friendly, iStoreGreen, the country’s first green self storage facility.

The Brooklyn, NY-based storage facility was recently made a partner in the EPA’s Green Power Partnership.  In addition to purchasing green energy, iStoreGreen has tried to make the user experience of its newly redesigned facility a more pleasant one by brightening the decor and piping in some good music.  ISG also offers a packing and moving supply store, moving services, business storage and mailbox rentals.

Rapanui Clothing – cool, honest and green

U.K. based Rapanui started as an underground T-shirt maker on the Isle of Wight, set up by the Drake-Knight brothers.  Pictured below are Mart (L) and Rob (R), per the brand’s Website, “dodgy looking Rapanui Founders.”

After becoming sick from surfing in polluted waters, and armed with degrees in Renewable Energy and Business, the pair formed Rapanui Clothing, which has quickly become one of the most ethically progressive, green clothing companies around. Pictured below are some of their stylish, casual threads.

Today, how and where something is made, is often as important as how much it costs, so the folks at Rapanui keep their brand transparent — they’re open and candid about how they (more…)
