whether you’re working from home, stuck in a cubicle, or blogging in a loft somewhere, your work space can often impact your productivity and state of mind. iStock_000005811070XSmall_1.jpg
here are a few simple ways to keep that desk area clean and green, get you out the door, and give you a heady sense of accomplishment.

  • clean up all those messy piles of paper and notes strewn about; they all have to go.  learn to literally handle each piece of paper that crosses your desk – once.  once you touch that piece of paper, just deal with it.  either pay that bill, file that important document, pass it along, or toss it in the recycle bin.  clutter does not help one function well.
  • go paperless.  pay your bills electronically; cancel all your catalogs and junk mail.  check out: proquo.com or ecocycle.org or obviously.com or stopjunkmail, if you’re UK-based.  don’t have enough room for file drawers?  scan the must-have documents, and store them on your computer or flash drive.
  • now that you can see it, give your work surface a nice, clean, wipe. try e-cloth.  just add a spritz of water, and voila, mission accomplished. dirt and germs vanish through the magic of microfiber. wipe down your desk at the beginning and end of each day. love your off-the-shelf sprays?  try Eco Mist.  disinfects surfaces; it’s unscented, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, non-allergenic, residue-free, biodegradable and Eco Options-approved. sure to make you smile.
  • green clean that machine.  computer screen looking funky, maybe even causing eye fatigue?  when the computer is cool and turned off, take a clean, lint-free cloth (micro fiber is great) and gently, very gently, wipe clean the screen.  be careful not to scratch or puncture it, of course.  now give that overworked keyboard and mouse some tlc.  the Pocket Purifier kills germs and bacteria via UV light, in 10 to 15 seconds.
  • drawers a mess?  take no more than ten minutes per drawer — empty each one, and sort through things.  either toss, file or pass along stuff you don’t need. store stuff you’ll actually use, like:  stapler, paperclips, scissors, letter opener, note pads, etc.
  • time to kick back, and gloat a little.  now get back to work, so you can go out and play with a clear head.
