- Trim some fat off your carbon footprint by stuffing less raw material in your mouth. Eat less beef – those cattle pump out methane and the process of raising cattle and livestock is an energy intensive endeavor. Don’t eat foods shipped to your local grocery store from Bimini, Guam or some other exotic locale. A lot of fossil fuel is burned getting that kiwi into your belly. A thinner, more compact ‘you’ will also take up less space, require less material to clothe — and perhaps save a cow by getting rid of that leather belt, (though nobody can pull off wearing anything with an elastic waist).
- Turn off the power. Stepping away from a black computer screen can be a liberating experience and you’ll save serious $$ on that electric bill. All those computer peripherals can go nighty-night when your computer is turned off or goes to sleep by plugging them all into a Smart PowerStrip or similar power-management device.
- Buying only the stuff you need will put more cash in your bank account, wallet, or God forbid, your savings account. Make buying something a well thought out process. Find out — where did it come from? How was it made? Is there a better, less expensive or earth-friendly alternative.
- Consume less by conserving more. Cut down on bottled water use by using a pitcher filter, faucet mounted or below sink water filtration system. Use old clothes for reusable cleaning wipes instead of paper towels. Capture the rainwater that pours off your roof in a rain barrel and give your plants and lawn an inexpensive and eco-friendly drink. If you consume less, you won’t need a second home to store junk.
- Get your DIY on. Making something with your own two hands can help rebuild that flagging self-image of yours.
