When Walmart talks, its suppliers listen. The mega-retailer will soon begin asking its suppliers to provide environmental info on all products carried in its stores. The company will use that information to give each item an eco rating measuring its environmental friendliness.
Though this is a net positive for American consumers, it’s always important to remember that this one of those deals where, ‘bigger’ isn’t always ‘better.’ Keep it local. Support your community businesses, neighborhood shops, and farmers’ markets whenever possible – or someday when you need, them they won’t be there.

A large percentage of the waste that goes into our landfills is organic material comprised of yard and food waste. Over 90% of of gas emissions from landfills are methane and CO2 created by decomposing organic waste. How can you help alleviate this problem? Start composting.
This compact and handy Envirocycle Composter has some great features: It’s made with durable recycled plastic and produces both solid and liquid compost. The drum rotates easily on 8 rollers and can be rolled to any spot to spread solid compost. The base collects liquid fertilizer (more…)

Next February, the Japanese will enjoy a new option from Honda—the sporty CR-Z hybrid coupe (shorthand for Compact Renaissance Zero) — expected to hit the states later next year. The coupe, which will use Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist system coupled to a 1.3-liter engine, will garner roughly 140 horsepower, 200 lb-ft of torque and a satisfying fuel economy of 55 mpg. And less carbon emissions equate to icing on the cake.
Debuted at last year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the vehicle will undergo design and engineering in Europe and is expected to flaunt its first production model at the Tokyo auto show this autumn. Our fingers are crossed that this sporty ride maintains the sleek appeal of its original concept, including the totally streamlined interior that exudes pure George Jetson appeal.

New York-based WEAR YOUR MUSIC creates eco-friendly jewelry that turns the used guitar strings of an eclectic range of famous musical artists into stylish bracelets that proclaim both your love of music, and your donation to charity.
The bangle-style bracelets are crafted from guitar strings donated by over 150 artists ranging from rock luminaries Eric Clapton and Pete Townsend to contemporary artists like My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, Jack Johnson, Carrie Underwood and Ani DiFranco. I have my eye on the under-appreciated Steve Vai bracelet ($150).
The fine silver used on each bracelet is also 100% recycled, as is the DVD case each bracelet comes in. Each piece is sold with a certificate of authenticity.
A portion of each sale is donated to charities like Carlos Santana’s Milagro Foundation and The Grateful Dead-affiliated Rex Foundation.
The company also makes a line of guitar string fashion bracelets (no rock star heritage) that start at $7.00

This Micro-Dot necklace is made from the remains of a repurposed skateboard deck. One side of the dots shows the graphics from the skateboard deck and the other side shows the inner layers of the skateboard (skateboards are made of several layers). You can flip one dot, three dots or all the dots, creating a variety of combinations and looks. The one-of-a-kind necklace is sealed with a non-toxic clear gloss.
