Organic Learning Farms are a relatively new enterprise for organic farmers.

A Learning Farm is usually located on the site of a certified organic farm, or created in conjunction with an existing farm as a non-profit organization. The farm learning centers provide hands-on experience for anyone interested in sustainable living through organic farming. As consumers explore innovative ways to improve environmental stewardship, learning farms may be the wave of the future.

Another great aspect of learning farms is that they are very kid-friendly and feature a relaxed atmosphere, which is especially important for families. There is a cost to the education offered through the learning centers which makes these little farms a great value added service and source of income to the organic farmer, while also benefiting the consumer. Classes may include cheese making, kid day (a goat class during kidding season), farm dreams (for aspiring farmers), homemade ice cream making and farm animal day topics, such as: getting a goat, chicken care, composting, overnight camp-outs, plus many more….even a worm class!
These learning centers aren’t always solely operated by paid staff. Volunteer opportunities abound, providing well-needed support to the local agricultural community, while allowing the public at large to gain valuable experience. Specific volunteer positions may involve helping the animal crew, working in the vegetable patch, lending a hand in the office, teaching classes or working at farmers’ markets. If you are interested in expanding your knowledge in the organic realm, then set aside your books because a learning farm is the best way to pull up your sleeves and get your hands dirty with a real agricultural experience.
