A Tried and True, Green Products Review
Love sparkling water, but hate schlepping bottles home and experiencing the eco-guilt of tossing the empties? I do, too. One solution…start using a sleek DIY soda-making machine from SodaStream.

We’re using The Fountain Jet and it’s great. We’re saving money, time, energy and reducing our impact on the environment. Here are just some of the upsides:
- it’s economical (no need to buy soda or seltzer)
- no need to schlep heavy bottles or cans from the store all the way home
- no need to store bottles or cans in your home
- no need to recycle or trash empty bottles and cans
- no batteries or electricity required
- no need to manufacture bottles and cans for your soda consumption
- no need to ship and transport soda from facility to market for you
- turns tap water into sparkling water with a few pumps
- builds upper arm strength (kidding)
We just fill up The Fountain Jet with tap water and start pumping. Once it’s carbonated, I pour into a tall glass, add a squeeze of orange, lemon or lime and enjoy my homemade bubbly. Although I haven’t personally tried them, SodaStream also offers Soda Mixes.
There are a few different SodaStream models and kits available. The Fountain Jet Starter Kit (above) gets you up and running for about $100. The Penguin Starter Kit is also available online for about $200. Click on the ad in the middle column of our site for more info or to purchase.

Cool idea. I love sparkling water too. Do you know how often the carbonator has to be replaced?
The Fountain Jet Starter Kit comes with: the Soda Maker, a 110-liter licensed carbonator and 2 carbonating bottles. According to the company, one carbonator will make 110 liters worth of sparkling beverage. When you exchange a used carbonator for a new one, it costs $21.99. ($36.99 if you don’t exchange)
We have one and love it!
THIS WILL COME AS GOOD NEWS TO USERS OF SODASTREAM PRODUCTS. SODASTREAM SUPPLIES CAN NOW BE PURCHASED AT KOHL’S STORES & KOHL’S.COM. THEY RUN PERIODIC SALES ON THE SYRUP’S. I’VE SEEN THEM AS LOW AS $2.95ea. THEY ALSO CARRY THE SODA MAKERS AS WELL. I USED TO GET THE SYRUP’S AT BOATER’S WORLD BUT THEY HAVE GONE OUT OF BUSINESS.
