Hate CFLs? Sylvania has just intro’d a new hologen energy-saving competitor to compact fluorescents. With incandescent bulbs soon to be phased out, consumers will be compelled to find energy-saving alternatives to light their homes.
Sylvania is marketing this new halogen bulb as a fully dimmable, instant-on bulb that provides better light than compact fluorescent bulbs without the mercury issues.
The SuperSaver bulbs are 33% more energy efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs, while CFLs are roughly 75% more efficient. The new bulbs also come in traditional shapes – no squiggly pigtails – and in a wide variety of traditional sizes.
So if light quality trumps – energy and cost savings in your home – these new halogen bulbs provide a ready solution. Available at Menard’s, selected BJ’s and online at Sylvania’s website.

I personally don’t mind the “squiggly pigtail” lights. I do mind that the halogen bulbs will not give me the cost savings, so I guess this is a non-event for me with the release of the halogen bulb.
Thanks

I am the ultimate environmental person…tree hugger supreme. But I will never use CFLs because of the harmful effect on the environment and humans due to improper disposal. You can no longer just throw a burned out light bulb in the trash.
Here are the recommended things to do if a CFL bulb breaks
1. Have people and pets leave the room right away.
2. open windows to ventilate the room for 10-15 minutes before returning to clean it up. Turn off central heating/cooling FOR SEVERAL HOURS. (How many people are going to KNOW to do this AND do it…if it is over 100 degrees outside…or 20 degrees below zero outside???)
3. thoroughly collect broken glass and visible powder but wear protective gloves or use a bar of soap to pick up the pieces to avoid touching it directly.
4. Place clean-up materials in a SEALED container or two SEALED plastic bags.
AND you should NEVER throw broken or non-broken CLFs in the trash.
CFLs contain mercury.
I am THRILLED that there is an alternative to
CFLs
Well, I do mind the squiggly pigtails and I hate the cold, glaring light of a CFL. I don’t care what people says, CFL light is depressing. And I know that they require much more energy to manufacture than incandescents — so much so that there is no real energy saving. Not only that, the manufacture of them is very polluting, which is why almost all of them are manufactured in China, which has almost no environmental laws. Worse, to make them affordable, the quality control of CFLs is very low. Bulb failures are so high as to make them no more reliable than incandescents. THen there is the mercury problem….
CFLs are not the answer. I can see a few applications of them, but not for lamps and indoor lighting. New technology is being developed and alternatives are coming to market soon. Until they do, I am stocking up on incandescents and using halogens as well. As for saving energy, I have a better idea than CFLS: when not in a room, turn the lights off! Use lower wattage bulbs in lamps, etc. I have neighbors who call themselves “green”, while they leave high wattage floodlights on all night, leave lights on in every room of the house, have big screen plasma TVs that use more power than my refrigerator, and drive an eight cylinder SUV. They are ridiculous sheep, who unthinkingly follow the crowd.
