Need an alternative form of transportation for short jaunts around your campus or housing development? Well here’s a cute option – the X-Treme XB-562 ebike – a compact, moped-style electric bike. This electric bike can be ridden like a regular bike, operate on 100% electric power, or any combination of the two.
The XB-562 has a 500-watt motor that can handle medium-sized hills and moderate terrain; front and rear dual spring loaded shocks; front and rear brakes; a chain drive with a variable speed twist throttle; an oversized seat; and full front and rear fenders. This bike can hit a top speed of 18 miles per hour, with a range of around 18 miles.
Like many electric bicycles, the X-Treme XB-562 ebike does not require a license to operate in most states. (Please contact the DMV to check the laws in your area before purchasing electric bicycles.) The cute little XB 562 is noise- and emissions-free, and operates on pennies a day.

With her first-ever post, we welcome our new California-based contributor, Frances Ho, a senior at UCSD, majoring in Environmental Systems & Urban Studies and Planning.

The First Lady keeps getting better. She’s been promoting her “Let’s Move!” campaign to solve childhood obesity, and decided to make a stop at a community garden in City Heights of San Diego last month.
The garden is a project started by the International Rescue Committee in June 2009 that gives jobs and fresh, organic produce to the international refugees and their families that work on the 2.3 acre farm. Extra produce is sold at farmers markets or to local restaurants for a little extra income. It’s a source of income and food, but the garden also plays a role as a haven for the refugees to reconnect with their native countries that they have had to leave behind.
Michelle Obama along with The California Endowment, are trying to get people – especially children – to eat and live healthy by promoting farmers markets, community gardens, and walkable neighborhoods.
What can you do? Start your own garden in your backyard or right on your kitchen counter. Fresh herbs and veggies have never been easier to grow (and eat)!

Spending these past several days and nights on Sarasota’s beaches and Bay is bringing out the beach bunny in me. With sun, salt and surf everywhere, one thing’s for certain – wrapping one’s bod in sustainable comfort is rule one.

When you worship at the alter of the sea, it doesn’t get much cooler than Surfmonk for hip shorts, shirts, dresses, robes, totes, beach blankets, body care, jewelry and more.
Apre wave bashing, luxuriate in roomy, uber soft, bamboo and organic cotton blends – whilst sipping your favorite libation, of course.
Now grab your board (or drink) and get in the game.

This urban greening concept comes via design students, Sara Ruzomberka and Tiffany Jimenez.
Why not transform small bits of our millions of acres of urban parking lots into utilitarian, eco-friendly micro-parks? These comforting little green oases would break up the seemingly endless sea of Escalades, Priuses and minivans. The park could serve as a resting place, bus stop, communal bike rack and car pooling commuter pick-up location.
One suggestion – add solar panels and create electric vehicle charging stations for the coming wave of electric cars and bikes.

We’re headed for the local farmer’s market…here’s an all-purpose bag for hauling around your summer stash. This classic small messenger bag is handmade of vintage canvas, and features WWII touches throughout. The designer calls it their Market Bag in Rural Rustic Repurposed. I love the muted colors, smart details and closure.
Buy local whenever you can.
