“Have you tried these?! They are the LOUDEST chip bags ever!!”
My friend had no idea what I was talking about on our most recent grocery shopping trip to Ralph’s. If anyone hasn’t noticed (or heard) yet, Sun Chips has come out with the first 100% compostable chip bag. The company has guaranteed the bags to be able to break down in active compost bins in just 14 weeks, voila!
These bags are notoriously (and might I say annoyingly?) loud, but for good reason; they are made of corn-based plastic (polyactide, PLA) instead of the traditional petroleum-based plastic (biaxially oriented polypropylene, OPP) and are much more pure to nature because of their comparatively more sustainable resource. And while Frito-Lay admits that not many Americans have composting bins in their backyard, it’s safe to say that these compostable bags are better than the OPP bags filling up our landfills.
So get yourself a bag and let it be heard! It’s the same great taste now with an extra crunch before you even take a bite.

Frances – Have you done a twitter search for ‘sunchips bag’ – every other comment is about how ridiculously loud the bags are. There are some real gems out there as well:
“sorry! cant hear you over this sunchips bag!” or
“Someone ate all the Sunchips. :( Apparently that damn bag is NOT loud enough to be considered a security device.” hahah.
The video of bag breaking down is also pretty cool.
Haha! That’s so funny. I’m glad people have definitely noticed the new Sun Chip bags, if anything, the loud noise may be a natural promoter for Sun Chip and future compostable bags!
