What better way to make a new product PR splash than with the intro of a soccer related product during the World Cup. Greendix, a Taiwanese supplier of custom solar panels, has developed the world’s first solar-powered football.

The solar panel innovator has transformed the traditional black pentagonal-shaped leather patches on the typical soccer ball into solar cells of the same size and shape.  This new product technology  illustrates how custom-shaped solar panels can be designed for a variety of off-beat applications.

The solar soccer ball is intended to facilitate soccer play by the visually impaired.  These football prototypes emit a tracking sound every time they get kicked.  The solar panels power the advanced built-in motion sensors and audio device, which is intended to one day enable visually impaired people to play football.

The verdict:  Practical use – limited.  Marketing and brand impact – big.
