Recycled jean insulation, all-natural plaster, and “consciously cool” ceiling fans–when Pollie Gautsch and her husband purchased 1.3 acres of San Diego land on which to build their dream home, they set to work researching all of the latest in green building technology. What they found was a lack of resources for eco-minded homeowners in southern California… so Pollie took it upon herself to create a site that would point people in the right direction. She founded SanDiegoGreenHomes.com to not only chronicle their own building process, but also guide others along the same path.
Recently, we asked Pollie a few questions related to her environmental endeavors:
AC: What kind of feedback has San Diego Green Homes received from the community?
PG: We have had an amazing response from the community — from inquiries about what types of green products we have used, to requests for consultation on their own project. It is wonderful that our community shares our vision to build green and use local products.
AC: What’s been your favorite green home improvement find so far?
PG: We have been very pleasantly surprised by large companies like Kohler’s commitment to water conservation and making green and sustainable products. We also really love our FSC Certified Teak floors from Indo Teak.
AC: If you could give one piece of advice to an eco-minded, DIY home builder, what would it be?
PG: It’s very important to be aware of where your materials come from and what is in them.
