Why do many people often associate the adjectives ‘green’ or ‘eco-friendly’ with ‘soft’ or ‘weak’? Just asking…

Two carts, two bikes, three dudes and eco-friendly coffee on the go! On my nightly web browsing (aka killing time), I came across a post about an ingenious business started by three, Brooklyn-based coffee-holics.

The three amigos ride around on bikes connected to rickshaws that transform into a mobile coffee bar, serving up fresh coffee (hot and cold!) — partially powered by their might — legs that heat water and arms to grind their coffee beans. And for just $2.50 a cup! Coffee for the green-minded doesn’t get much better than this.

The KickstandBrooklyn.com coffee boys are typically found perking up parks (McCarren Park), local crafts fairs and wherever good, fresh coffee is in need. Follow the Kickstand Cart on twitter @KickstandCoffee to see where they’ll show up next. I wish I were in Brooklyn now just to see and try it. If you’re in the area, make sure to pay them a visit and let us know about that cup of joe!

On first glance this Solar-Breeze swimming pool skimmer may look a little like a floating pizza box, but on further examination you’ll find it features solar panels and a skimming tray. This gadget charges via the sun, stores the energy on an on-board battery and scoots around your pool picking up surface debris including leaves small branches, suntan oil, dust and the occasional bikini top into its removable tray.

Software directs it to areas of greatest sunlight to keep it charging at optimum levels. Rotating corner bumpers keep it bouncing around the pool. $499 @ solar-breeze.com

There’s something about the simplicity of a sterling silver pendant necklace that always catches my eye. With an admitted tendency to over-accessorize, I often find myself envious of those girls who can slip into a tank, fasten a sweet chain and be out the door. That must be the reasoning behind my love of this droplet necklace by Real Jewels, crafted in response to the Gulf Oil disaster.

A part of the Save Our Shores Collection, 100 percent of the profits from this recycled sterling silver will go to Save Our Gulf, a Waterkeeper Alliance initiative. On one side of the smooth, gray charm stands a pelican in water. On the other, the SOS emblem, reading the organization’s motto.
You can check out the pretty pendent at real-jewels.com, where it retails for $85, alongside Real Jewels’ other eco chic jewelry, like my favorite, the “Recycled 925″ in the Real Spirit collection.
For the full scoop on the philosophy of this forward-thinking brand (everything you’d expect plus fair-trade protocols and a family-run business), click on “our commitment” under “about” on their website.

The sloping terrain of British Columbia inspired the concept of modular home-builder, PreFabulous Homes’ The Waterfall house – a three-tiered prefab home designed to cascade down a hillside.

Each of the 2,600 square foot home’s three levels features a green roof designed to both beautify the home and reduce run-off and erosion of the hillside from the area’s frequent rains. As in all of the company’s EcoFabulous line of prefabricated homes, recycled materials are used in counter-tops and tile work.

Homes are fully customizable and can feature an energy efficient Hydronic heating system that provides radiant heat and hot water; energy efficient lighting and appliances; low VOC paints; and recycled paper kitchen cabinetry. Prefab manufacturing and modular home design, speed up the construction process while greatly reducing manufacturing waste.
