I believe this looks like $14.7 million for ALL alternative energy sectors of which ethanol is a part

And I believe oil and gas spend as much as $144 million in one quarter. Check out second paragraph here

Hey Mike,
Glad to see you’re still out there fighting the good fight. The corn ethanol biz is highly subsidized. We no doubt want biofuels and cellulosics to successfully supplant fossil fuels in our energy product pipeline. And the oil lobby is indeed one of the biggest and most powerful and well connected. But is corn ethanol the answer? In the battle of links here’s a couple:

Ross, please also note I did NOT say corn ethanol was the answer. I said the lobby and subsidies were not that high ultimately and provided backup.
There are a multitude of sources for ethanol. That is what I have always argued. Read the book.
Also there are a lot of myths perpetuated about the subsidies.
Researchers at Iowa State University have found that, even though $1.3 billion was given to the corn ethanol farming industry in the form of subsidies in 2007, the government saved $3.45 billion on what are called loan deficiency payments as a direct result of these ethanol subsidies. Iowa State researchers concluded that ethanol subsidies have had the effect of lowering overall farm subsidies by $2.65 billion in 2007.
Thoughts? Refutations? We are talking solely about subsidies here, not whether corn is the best source, which it is not. As I have always said, corporate agriculture and monoculture are the culprits here, as ethanol was simply plugged in to a defective system. I believe in local farming, food and fuel, small scale, multitude of sources. Again, check out the book.
