Sander Architects created this 4,500sf elongated home for a couple who owns a 40-acre horse breeding ranch in Oregon. The site encompasses a large pond and a striking views of a magnificent butte, Smith Rock and distant mountains.

The couple contacted Sander after they fell in love with another of the firm’s home designs that they saw featured in Dwell magazine. Sander specializes in Hybrid House designs that marry the efficiencies of prefab construction and high design.

The home replaced the original residence on the property – a double-wide trailer, which had quickly become too small when the couple’s son took to the drums as a musical pastime. The woman of the house is an artist and desired an art studio; and the couple wanted privacy from the road and arriving horse trailers, while still taking advantage of the views. Space, light – and lots of sound separation – were also necessities.

The home’s design evolved as a long envelope with a roof that mirrored the form of the nearby butte (above). One entire side of the house is translucent acrylic panels (for views and light) and the other side has a skin of overlapping recycled rusted metal panels that again echoes the geology and coloration of the butte. Other green building features: bamboo flooring and cabinets, stained concrete floors and energy-efficient radiant heat on the first floor.
