An eclectic roundup of green events and happenings from around the globe…
- For all you vegans out there: On (or about) March 20, thousands of animal-friendly people in all 50 U.S. states and two dozen other countries will get active to host educational events for Meatout - the world’s largest grassroots diet education campaign. Activists distribute free food, educate their communities, and ask their friends, families, and neighbors to “kick the meat habit” and explore a wholesome, compassionate diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- The true cost of clothing – a special exhibit Eco Chic: Towards Sustainable Swedish Fashion – 11a to 5p Wed.-Sun. Through May 15. Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, 551 Broadway, Sonoma, CA. $10-$12. “Eco Chic” is being shown alongside an exhibition by Marin artist Daniel McCormick titled “Iterations of Ecological Art and Design.” (707) 939-7862. www.svma.org.
- FREE admission: Columbia College Chicago ZERO Waste: Fashion Re-Patterned exhibit March 3 – April 16 … supported by Use It Again (USAgain.com) … and curated by assistant professor Arti Sandhu who wanted to merge the concepts of fashion and zero waste. - Brit Liggett, a 26-year-old blogger from Brooklyn, joined a research expedition this week to collect plastic waste from the ocean. The 11-day clean sweep journeys through the Beagle Channel, Chile. Brit beat out global competitors to clench the coveted opportunity from Electrolux as part of company’s “Vac from the Sea” awareness initiative.
- As we reported pre-event, here’s a quick peek at green fashioning its way down the Red Carpet: Oscar winner Colin Firth’s wife Olivia was swathed in an eco-minded gown made by upcycling expert and haute designer Gary Harvey – materials were sourced from 11 pre-loved, vintage dresses. Lest we forget, dashing hub Colin was resplendent in organically-sourced garb as well.
- Post-Oscars, Natalie Portman partied in a sustainably fashioned dress ($50) from H&M’s new Shades of White Conscious Collection, scheduled to hit stores April 14. (line materials include: organic cotton, Tencel and recycled polyester.)

The rising cost of milk is forcing consumers to make some hard decisions at the supermarket checkout counter. Here’s Jessica’s takes on the organic vs. regular milk debate.
When it comes to buying milk, which one is better? “Regular,” non-organic milk is cheaper, yet expires sooner, while certified organic milk can cost up to a few dollars more per gallon, but has a longer shelf life. When it comes to nutrition, both certified organic and regular milk appear equal. They have the same amount of fat (depending on which milk you buy), and same nutritional value.
However, a major difference is how the cows are treated, which in turn affects what we’re ingesting. Certified organic milk comes from organic cows who access cleaner pastures and aren’t exposed (more…)

Urban gardening is becoming soooo trendy – why rush off to the market for fresh eggs when you can get fresh ones from your own backyard? But where does a space-challenged urbanite with a sense of style safely house those peckish chickens?
Solution – hatched in the U.K., the nogg…a sculptural cedar chicken home with many chicken-friendly features: fox-proof latches, removable base tray for cleaning, a glass top that lifts for ventilation, a rear hatch for egg removal and cedar construction that is naturally antibacterial and fresh smelling. Said to house up to 4 chickens. Designed and hand crafted by Matthew Hayward.
