Using reclaimed lumber to create new furniture is a great way to reduce both construction waste and the destruction of forests. A prime example: designer and furniture maker Eric Slayton creates his one-of-a-kind minimalist furniture primarily from reclaimed industrial materials like the timber in the benches pictured above (cypress), and below (poplar and heart pine).

In honor of Mama Earth Day’s 41st Anniversary, today’s roundup of sustainable fashion highlights treasures that tickle our fancy and harken back to when the eco movement all began.
Having followed the scene for several years, I feel like this year was really breakthrough – with mass retailers like Payless and H&M; department stores like Nordstrom & Bloomingdale’s; indie outlets like Etsy; luxe designers; and the proliferation of online eco boutiques, vintage shops and etailers of all manner featuring an ever expanding array of lust-worthy sustainable and vegan-friendly apparel & accessories. happy earth day indeed.

Symbolic of ecofashion and evocative of Paris – ornamental green wireframed shoe of succulents & moss; Moulin Rouge $49, includes delivery @ VivaTerra.

Earth Day is sort of a Valentine’s Day for Mother Earth, not a real holiday, but a good excuse to pay attention to someone you may not pay enough attention to the rest of the year. I thought I’d put together a quick list of less-than-painful ways to express your appreciation for the planet.
- Actually walk or ride a bike somewhere. Driving 200 yards to the store to pick up a Snickers Bar is not the way to express one’s “green-ness” on Earth Day.
- No texting. Actually have a conversation with someone.
- Turn off the big screen and read a book, (eco-libris suggests 41 ways to green your read). Or perhaps, better yet, write something.
- Keep your fanny out of the big box stores. If you have to shop, hit the local farmer’s market or local shops. (more…)

A weekend steel cabin with a couple of twists … this 1,000 square-foot tiny house resides near a river on a flood plain – hence the stilts. In addition, the Delta Shelter is solely a weekend abode, and thus is left unattended for days, or weeks at a time — the solution – the home can secured and closed-up into a tidy steel

box by lowering it’s 10′ x 18′ steel shutters by turning a very ‘Jules Verne’ hand crank (see above). (more…)

I enjoyed reading Susan Freinkel’s new book, PLASTIC A Toxic Love Story. It’s a comprehensive and compelling tale about the marriage of human ingenuity and science, and their enduring impact on society.
Weaving together facts, figures and first-hand interviews with inventors and major industry players, Freinkel’s illuminating work begins with a reference to an aptly named piece of history called, Plasticville and tracks our epic, real-life love/hate relationship with this ubiquitous stuff that’s become an essential part of our lives.
We had the opportunity to ask the author a few questions, here goes:
Susan, could you comment on the state of America’s love affair with plastic today? (more…)
