More and more big box companies are riding the green wave – case in point, the world’s biggest box, Target. Personally, I’m not a steady frequenter of big box stores but I recently had occasion to bop in there and I have to say, it’s pretty cool — wide aisles, well lit, friendly service and a nice selection of reasonably priced, quality merch.
Here’s what really impressed me: there was a decent selection of organic foods on the shelves; a sprinkling of organic produce; eco-friendly cleaning products like Seventh Generation; Burt’s Bees and other body-friendly health & beauty products; sheets made of organic cotton and towels made of bamboo (although I’m not a fan of bamboo towels, those I’ve tried didn’t seem to absorb water as effectively as organic cotton). I noticed they even have their own line of furniture derived from sustainably forested wood, called, Room Essentials.
While there, I picked up a jar of Archer Farms USDA certified organic crunchy peanut butter; and after shmearing it on toast this morning, I’m happy to say that it tastes great, smells good and has a nice, smooth consistency. Apparently, Archer Farms is their house brand — much like 365 is for Whole Foods. This organic peanut butter is comprised of dry roasted organic peanuts, organic palm oil, organic molasses and sea salt. (I’d tell you the price but I didn’t keep the receipt, my bad.)

Intrigued by the whole experience, I checked out their website, and there’s lots of good stuff going on behind the scenes at Target. In addition to sponsoring community-based projects, they’re developing more sustainable packaging with their Archer Farms private label brand. And their recycling program is totally transparent, and easily accessible to everyone – whether or not you shop there.
Although buying local and supporting farmers’ markets are still my preferred way to go, I must say, Target’s a great place to pick up everyday essentials. They’re on my list of do-gooders. Remember, we not only vote at the ballot, but also with our wallets.
