Anyone who sits at a desk for most of their day can appreciate a nice comfy chair, yes? But what happens to it when it’s ready for the heave ho? Naturally, a cradle to cradle chair with the ability to leave no lasting imprint on the environment would be the ultimate. And the next best thing would be upcycling. But as far as we know, not a heck of a lot of upcycling is being done with office chairs these days so rather than have them sit in a landfill, another solution would be to recycle them.

A member of Herman Miller’s design team and San Francisco based, Yves Béhar found inspiration in the Golden Gate Bridge and the principles of suspension bridges when he and his team created the “frameless” SAYL chair. It’s 93 percent recyclable and won the inaugural Core77 design award last month. True to the Herman Miller design aesthetic, the SAYL Chair is elegant, ergonomically spot-on, and not as pricey as some – retailing for $400; (compared to the Aeron at twice the price). We’ll have to take one for a spin.
