It’s hard to express just how good it feels to harvest fresh greens for your dinner table from a garden growing just outside your door. It does something on a deeper level than simply provide fresh, homegrown, healthy food.
In today’s world, especially for people like me whose homes are surrounded by concrete, it can be too much of a chore to construct your own urban garden and reap the benefits. With many different types of self-made containers in use, I still swear by my Urbin grower system. (more…)

It is widely known that recycling benefits the environment because it means we (more often than not) do not have to dig up anything, cut down anything or release anything into the atmosphere to get the end product.
Reasons why we should look to recycle our old gold and cut down on mining are: (more…)

Conservationists are celebrating the Food Network’s recent decision to remove all shark recipes from FoodNetwork.com in response to a viral online campaign on Change.org, one of the world’s fastest-growing platforms for social change.
Conservation activist Jessica Belsky started the campaign on Change.org to promote shark conservation during the popular “Shark Week” television series. This coolly glowing lamp is created by designer Jonas Hakaniemi, who developed the first recycling method for flat glass in Finland.
The Mutka glass lamp expresses the contrast between hot and cold. The icy look of glass is enhanced by the built-in, energy-efficient LED light. This little designer lamp (18x18x15 cm) can be used on a night stand, book shelf, or as a mood light.

Go sustainable: Ditch the petroleum-based crayons, lead-based pencils and virgin tree-based paper products. It’s time to reach for school supplies made from renewable resources, or recycled materials — they’re healthier for us, our kids and the planet. Here’s my roundup of 7 essentials for my little guy:
(above L to R)
Non-toxic Soy Crayons
Consider these safe and sustainable soy-based crayons by Prang. They can either look like your usual crayons or come in various shapes. My favorites are the little rock shaped crayons. They’re unconventional but more tactile for young artists. $1/pack, 8 colors
Banana Paper Notebook
No acid, not made from trees, water based inks and glues. I can’t get enough of these Banana Paper Notebooks. Poke around a little to find a cover you like, they come in a bunch of different designs. $5.95
