We thought we’d republish this list of green school supplies.
Go sustainable: Ditch the petroleum-based crayons, lead-based pencils and virgin tree-based paper products. It’s time to reach for school supplies made from renewable resources, or recycled materials — they’re healthier for us, our kids and the planet. Here’s my roundup of 7 essentials for my little guy:
(above L to R)
Non-toxic Soy Crayons
Consider these safe and sustainable soy-based crayons by Prang. They can either look like your usual crayons or come in various shapes. My favorites are the little rock shaped crayons. They’re unconventional but more tactile for young artists. $1/pack, 8 colors
Banana Paper Notebook
No acid, not made from trees, water based inks and glues. I can’t get enough of these Banana Paper Notebooks. Poke around a little to find a cover you like, they come in a bunch of different designs. $5.95

Recycled Markers
Washable, non-toxic markers that are also fast drying. I love their name, “E-color-gy” $4.95, 8-pack
Biodegradable Highlighter Pencils
Forget the traditional highlighters that abound in our dumps, and opt for these more earth-conscious highlighters with ink that won’t smear or bleed. $5.95, set of 4

Solvent Free, Non Toxic Glue
Here’s nothing new. It has been used in schools in Italy since the 1930’s. You may need to watch your kids though because not only does it smell good, it tastes good too! Coccoina Adhesive: silver tin with brush $8.
Recycled Scissors
Suitable for kids, the handles are 70% recycled plastic and they are anti-microbial too! $4.20 on Amazon.

Biodegradable Pens
Even if you’re conscientious about refilling your traditional pens, these pens are even better: they’re made from corn and are totally biodegradable. $1.99
