Days are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping and the autumn leaves have begun to turn. However, it’s still not too late to squeeze in that summer trip that you haven’t had time for. Whether you’re planning a camping trip in Colorado or heading to Miami to soak up some rays at the beach, there are numerous ways to reduce your carbon footprint while traveling. Here are a few tips:

  • Save paper by using E-tickets and phone-swipe boarding passes.
  • If you can, carpool or take a bus or train. If you’re flying, take a direct flight.
  • Travel light. This saves room to bring back goods that boost local economies.
  • Choose environmentally friendly hotels and resorts. Check Green Hotels for local listings.
  • Choose one place and explore extensively. Many people try to cram numerous different cities and places in one trip. Save energy and get a fuller experience.
  • Walk and use public transportation as much as possible. Or have some fun and rent a bike. If you need to rent a car, consider vehicle efficiency.
  • Offset your flight by making carbon offset donations at Climate Trust and Native Energy.  You can choose to invest in several different options including wind energy and solar power.

Don’t feel guilty about going on a trip. Although traveling usually involves a great deal of energy consumption, you can help raise awareness. Use your “green habits” as an example for others to follow.
