Now here’s something to smile about – a new toothbrush company with a big heart, set to make a big impact.

Twenty-two year-old founder Joe Brennan formed cause-related Smiles for the People based on three core values: people, planet and product … the trifecta of goodness.

We’ve been using these toothbrushes for the past several weeks, and here’s why we like them:

  • handles are made of 100% biodegradable bamboo
  • bristles (synthetic polyester) give teeth a good cleaning
  • grip-friendly design
  • light as a feather
  • for every one purchased, the company donates one to those in need

As Brennan puts it, “I was moved to start Smiles because I am fascinated by the ways in which social enterprises are leveraging otherwise normal products for a social good. I am also a firm believer in the idea that companies can earn a profit while making the world a better place. Everything we do at Smiles for the People focuses on three things: helping people receive the dental care they need, selling great products at great prices, and making a positive impact on the environment.”

Are you upset by the amount of trash washed ashore when you walk the beach? It seems not a day goes by without seeing at least one plastic toothbrush tangled in seaweed. It really adds up. As Smiles reminds – almost 50 million pounds of plastic toothbrushes are sent to landfills each year, and some of that plastic winds up on our shores.

A socially responsible company helping kids all over the world maintain good dental health by providing a free, earth-friendly product … We gladly give Smiles for the People our green thumbs up … “when you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.”

By the way, the cost of one toothbrush is $5.95. Since dentists recommend that we replace our toothbrush every 3 months, if you buy enough for a year, the cost would be reduced to $5.15 per brush.

Full disclosure: we received two complimentary toothbrushes for the purposes of this Tried and True Green Product Review.
