Industrial hemp appears in all sorts of products today – from milk and beauty lines – to upholstery and fashion lines. As a weed, it can grow quickly and pesticide-free, so many a sustainably-minded designer is incorporating it in their line. Once converted into fiber, hemp is durable and versatile. It’s cropping up in: wedding gowns, yoga & dance wear, designer handbags & wallets, shoes, jewelry, as well as everyday tops, skirts, shorts and dresses.

Essentially, today’s curated collection of personal fashion faves is inspired by HempFest, taking place in Seattle, today through Sunday. We personally own both handbags and shoes made of hemp – we luva the ganja. Today’s roundup includes fashion designers with styles ranging from straight-ahead to fringe – all  incorporating hemp as a fiber of choice.

Hempfest is part music fest, part protest – this 22nd annual celebration features: 6 stages of music, lots of food, crafts, pop smoking hippies and plenty of guest speakers – all enthusiastically supporting the effort to legalize cannabis on a national level. In case you’re wondering, it’s now legal for adults to possess up to an ounce of marijuana within the state of Washington.

With Dr. Sanjay Gupta coming out in support of using certain strains of the weed for medical applications, (weed on cnn), the debate over legalization is once again news fodder. It’ll be interesting to see how long it may be before pot, whether consumed on a recreational or medical basis, becomes legal on a national level.
