What could show more holiday love than giving your family’s pooch something to make them feel better? I don’t know of any dog owner who doesn’t enjoy treating their pooch to at least one goody everyday. We give our extended family of lovable canines treats that are packed with nutritious goodness as well as flavor:

(above) Our relative’s rescue dog, Bella is 11 years old. After her morning and evening walks, Bella darts over to the “treat area” and gets ready to “sit” knowing that she’ll receive 2 hits of Happy Hips treats.

There are many different flavors and formulas available; the ones I’ve been giving her are Chicken Breast. What’s great is that there are NO added hormones, antibiotics, fillers or byproducts (no wheat, flour, corn, soy, sugar, salt, artificial flavors, BHA/BHT). Just chicken breast, Vitamin E supplement, glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulfate for helping to maintain healthy joints.

organic, dye-free dog toys

orgdogtoy5.jpg

I intend to lead a long, long life in doggie-years. In pursuit of canine longevity I try not to ingest anything that could contribute to my early demise. Since I spend an inordinate portion of my day chewing and licking both appropriate (toys), and – I admit – inappropriate (the occasional throw pillow) stuff, I’m very careful about what my toys are made of.

orgdogtoy3_1.jpg

seamstudious___1_2_1.JPGI don’t want to be ingesting harmful pesticides, herbicides, dyes and chemicals. That’s why simple, eco-friendly toys like those pictured above have tremendous appeal. They’re made of chemical-free certified organic cotton, without dyes or additives. Handmade in Vermont.

Note: not for super-destructive hounds.

waterproof eco dog jacket – made in the USA

aaolive2.jpgColumbus may have discovered America, but look what I’ve just dug up… a classy dog coat that’s not only made of recycled polyester that can be recycled again and again; but I’m proud to say it’s also made right here in the USA.

Waterproof and outfitted with reflective flares for safe nighttime jaunts, it’s designed to suit me and my canine comprades who range in size from Labrador to Chihuaua.

In stylish shades of moss or sky, this handsome wrap helps prepare us for inclement weather as autumn’s temps continue to drop.  Find Cloudburst @ olivegreendog.com and hey – remember to include code:  OliveAC at checkout for a nice 10% off.

eco-dog deal of the day: olive green dog

Summer’s gone, time to reflect, re-energize and work on one’s wardrobe and personal presentation. Our good friends at Olive Green Dog have some great sales going on for dogs of all sizes and descriptions. Here are a few of my favorites.

olivePeacesweater_M_1.jpgoliveskull_sweater_M_1.jpg

seamlksupprofside___1_1_1.JPGFor all you designer label-chasing hounds – world-renowned eco-fashion designer Deborah Lindquist has really gone to the dogs… just kidding. She designed these cute doggie sweaters from 100% recycled cashmere. Depending on which way your doggie-door swings you can either go all peace + love (Peace on left above), or macho (Skull sweater).  Marked down from a pricey $90 to a very reasonable $45. Limited supply – so hustle!

oliveBADBONE_PAIRdish.jpg

This “Bad to the Bone” doggie bowl set (above) from Chowtime Productions captures my essence completely.  Hand-painted, with every hue applied 3-4 times, these ceramic babies are Bisque-fired not once, but twice and sealed with a handmade, lead-free glaze. You can even microwave these bowls if you’re a pooch that needs his chow ‘just so’.  $30 a set, marked down from $60.  (You can even get them custom monogrammed.)

olivethree_hemp_collars_M_1.jpg

These handsome hemp collars from Good Dog (above) will help any pooch get his green on.  Made of eco-friendly hemp – these collars are durable, naturally hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial.  On sale for $11.40 each (marked down from $19) – a small price to pay for such a large dose of eco-style.

By the way, that’s me, Seamus the eco-friendly Boston Terrier (above, R).

Seamus the Eco Dog – aromatherapy dog bed – a tried and true green product review

aromadogbed2.jpg
My bosses here at altCon bought me this bed as partial payment for my work here as their correspondent and canine product reviewer, and I love it.  This Organic Buckwheat bed is very Zen – and much heavier and more durable than others I’ve previously destroyed.

The big bonus is the aromatherapy feature – this bed smells great (lavender, peppermint and chamomile),aromadogbed4.jpg repels fleas, makes me smell springtime fresh and has a calming effect that quells my compulsion to chew the bed up as I’ve been prone to do with lesser quality beds.  Plus, I enjoy lounging on this sweet-smelling throne while making my two, brother-dogs all the more envious!

The bed, which is striped on one side and a rich chocolate brown on the other, has a removable, washable organic cotton cover with an inner liner of 100% cotton flannel over buckwheat hull filling and a kapok cushion.  Organic buckwheat, unlike typical pet bed fill, is grown without herbicides or pesticides and is hypoallergenic – important features for the modern green dog.

Don’t get sticker shock – this bed goes for $139 @ olivegreendog.com.  Isn’t your dog worth it?

Seamus reviews super-healthy Holistic Select Dog Food

hoisitcselect1.jpgholisticselect2.jpg

A food management crisis was narrowly averted here at the Eco Dog compound.  One of our human decision-makers (they will go nameless…we may need them later) neglected to note that our usual dog chow supply was getting dangerously low.

seamwtoylksup_1_1_1.JPGThe good folks at Holistic Select had fortunately chosen to send my two canine buddies and me a fresh supply of their Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon Meal, and Chicken Meal and Rice Radiant Adult Health dry food, along with a few Large and Giant Breed samples for taste testing (I’m a svelte 29 lbs while Madison the newfie weighs in at 125 plus).  Result: crisis averted, 3 well-fed canines with licked-clean bowls – we ate a few small meals as opposed to 1 large to transition between foods – and a newfound appreciation for healthy eating.

You’d think a dog food packed with a variety of “Select Actives” – healthy grains, enzymes, minerals and antioxidants would taste like medicine cabinet – but this food tastes really, really good.  These folks take their pet nutrition very, very seriously.

Taste: 5 dog bones*
Health: 5 dog bones
Digestibility: 5 dog bones

*you can’t do better than 5 bones
